Many moons from now when someone reads this post and my post yesterday about Microsoft's HIS strategy, there will be allegations made about foreknowledge, Secret Santas and Fairy Godmothers about today's Amalga announcement from Microsoft.
Did I know about Azyxxi, heck yeah (hello EMPI!)!
Did I wonder why the heck there wasn't more from Microsfoft such as an HIS sysem or an RIS\PACS system. Most definitely.
I understand the dynamics here, don't get me wrong. Partner relationships, motivation perceptions and a slew of other sensitive landscape issues. Those still aren't good reasons why Microsoft, or any other technology company, wasn't invading this vertical and putting things on a more even keel. To say the typical HIT&S vendor has the typical Life Sciences\Health Care customer rather rudely over a barrel is an understatment and not an inaccurate generalization. There are exceptions, but they are exceptions.
I should have been pining for a million bucks.
Times have just become even more interesting and promise to get even more interesting. Stay tuned, I have a feeling there's going to be a few more MOAB's dropped on our little landscape in the coming months.
As for you vendors ... There's a reason slashdotters derisively refer to Microsoft as the Borg.
